Truth interrogation: OSINT and Artificial Intelligence

Contents

In today's world, open source intelligence (OSINT) has become an essential component in the investigation process for both government agencies and private investigators.

OSINT has a remarkable capacity to generate leverageable intelligence that can positively impact case outcomes and settlement prospects. With the rise of data generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI), rather than by humans, the nature of testing and verifying online information is rapidly changing.

What is OSINT?

OSINT involves the gathering, analysing, and processing of publicly available information from various sources, including social media, news articles, government filings, legal reports, and academic publications. While this type of intelligence gathering has proven to be an effective method, it is important to ensure that the information gathered is truthful and accurate. That is where truth interrogation comes in.

Truth interrogation – ensuring information is trustworthy and accurate

Truth interrogation is the process of verifying information to ensure that it is reliable and accurate. This process involves analysing the information collected from various sources and assessing its credibility, accuracy, and reliability. By doing so, investigators can ensure that the information they are relying on to make important decisions is based on truthful and accurate data.

The importance of truth interrogation cannot be overstated; OSINT investigations often rely on data from various sources, some of which may be unreliable or biased. As a result, it is crucial for investigators to conduct thorough truth interrogations to ensure that the data they are using is accurate and trustworthy. Failure to do so could lead to incorrect conclusions, flawed decisions, or even legal consequences.

AI and machine learning – a challenge for truth interrogation

With the rise of AI and machine learning, it is becoming increasingly common for data to be generated by machines rather than humans, and for humans to accept AI-generated data as fact. This is more apparent with the wider and more public use of ‘Deepfake’ AI software, whereby fake images or videos are created that can show people saying or doing things they never actually did. This includes recent examples of images circulated that showed Donald Trump being indicted and remanded by police, despite no such event having yet taken place. When AI video and imagery are convincing, it can lead to investigation rabbit holes and result in incorrect conclusions.

This poses a new challenge for truth interrogation, as there may be biases or errors in the AI-generated data that need to be identified and corrected. It is critically important for investigators to have a thorough understanding of the AI systems used to generate the data, and to conduct additional checks to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data.

Aggregated intelligence – ensuring the accuracy of data from multiple sources

Similarly, aggregated intelligence, which is the process of collecting and analysing data from multiple sources to create a more comprehensive picture of a particular issue or topic, also requires careful truth interrogation. Aggregated intelligence often involves combining data from various sources, some of which may be conflicting or inaccurate. Therefore, it is crucial for investigators to conduct a thorough analysis of the aggregated data to ensure that it is accurate and reliable.

Our comprehensive approach to OSINT investigations

We understand the importance of truth interrogation when conducting OSINT investigations, including those involving AI-generated data and aggregated intelligence. We have developed a comprehensive approach to ensure that gathered intelligence is truthful and reliable, regardless of its source.

Our approach to truth interrogation involves four key steps.

  1. Establish the credibility of the source. This involves verifying the identity of the source, assessing their track record, and determining if they have any biases or agendas that could affect the accuracy of the information they provide.
  2. Assess the accuracy of the information itself. This involves comparing the information to other sources to verify its authenticity and ensure that it is consistent with other data points. If there are any inconsistencies, Quantuma will investigate further to determine the accuracy of the information.
  3. Assess the reliability of the information. This involves determining if the information is up to date, if it has been independently verified, and if it is from a reputable source. If there are any doubts about the reliability of the information, Quantuma will conduct additional research to ensure that it is trustworthy.
  4. Finally, Quantuma also utilises advanced technology using a variety of tools and software to analyse data from multiple sources, including social media, news articles, and government reports. These tools allow Quantuma to quickly and efficiently analyse large amounts of data, testing findings for accuracy, regardless of whether it is human or AI-generated.

Once the information has been verified through these steps, we will analyse it to determine its relevance to the investigation. This involves assessing the significance of the information and how it fits into the overall picture of the investigation. This analysis allows us to make informed decisions about reporting intelligence that is based on accurate and reliable data.

Summary

The importance of being able to determine the ‘truth’ in OSINT investigations cannot be overstated. With the rise of AI-generated data, and the use of aggregated intelligence, it is more critical than ever to ensure that the information being used is trustworthy and accurate. As individuals, it is essential to be cautious when relying on information from online sources. Private investigators must adopt comprehensive approaches to ensure the accuracy of the information they are using. By doing so, we can ensure that our decisions are based on reliable data and avoid the potential consequences of incorrect conclusions.
